A sales director's question, "How do you get a coaching leadership - which behaviors to use?"

Many organizations talk about having coaching leadership. But what does that really mean? What should you think about to become one? "How do you get a coaching leadership and which behaviors should you then use?"

When we analyze effective and motivating coach conversations, it becomes clear that certain behaviors are more important than others.

If you as a manager want a more coaching approach, you need to increase or decrease a number of verbal behaviors. You need to train your skill in coaching your employees. This requires time, training and commitment.

How to do this requires time, practice and commitment.

Below you will find some behaviors associated with effective and motivating coaching leadership.

  • The coach talks less than the coachee during conversations

  • Coach asks more questions than answers

  • The coach allows the coachee to reflect instead of giving feedback

  • The coach has fewer suggestions for activities than the coachee

  • The coach tests his understanding of the situation several times during a conversation

Note that these are a few short points on What to do in How to do it.

Good luck with a coaching leadership!
